When Trish Lincoln from Boston, Massachusetts, first heard about School the World, she recognized a unique opportunity to contribute her expertise in a meaningful way. As a registered nurse, Trish understood that our immersive service trips require not only educators and builders, but also trained healthcare professionals who can ensure the wellbeing of every participant.
"I really like the mission of School the World," Trish shared on her third trip to Guatemala in 2025. "They don’t just come in, build a classroom, and leave. There’s a long-term commitment that truly supports communities."
Volunteer nurses like Trish are essential members of our field teams during service trips. Their presence brings peace of mind and medical insight, helping to ensure that every participant—from high school students to adult volunteers—has a safe and supported experience.
But their impact goes deeper than physical health. Nurses witness the strength and determination of the communities we partner with and understand that education, wellness, and community development are deeply interconnected.
Trish recalled her first impressions of Guatemala: "It’s such a beautiful country. The colors, the people—the warmth. But what really moved me was the welcome we received from the communities. The smiles, the streamers, the joy—it brought tears to my eyes."
"You walk into homes where people cook over open fires, sleep on mats on dirt floors, and yet you’re met with such openness," she reflected. "To them, it’s their life—and they welcome you into it with pride."
This balance—recognizing both the challenges and the strength of the communities we serve—is central to School the World’s approach. It’s also why having trained, empathetic professionals like Trish on our teams is so important.
Trish has seen students arrive with a wide range of emotions and backgrounds, and watched them grow through the experience: "They come with their own reasons and leave with a shared sense of purpose. I’ve seen them become more grounded, more unified. It’s powerful."
The presence of volunteer nurses supports this growth. Whether managing minor injuries, supporting emotional wellbeing, or simply being a reassuring presence, they create the conditions for students to stretch beyond their comfort zones and deepen their understanding of the world—and themselves.
Reflecting on her time in Guatemala, Trish shared, "I carry their smiles with me. On hard days, I think of those kids and their joy—it gives me strength."
This mutual exchange lies at the heart of School the World’s mission. While nurses provide essential care, they also gain a renewed perspective on resilience, connection, and what truly matters.
Our success depends on committed professionals like Trish who see health, education, and community empowerment as intertwined. They offer more than medical care—they bring compassion, cultural humility, and a deep belief in the potential of every child and family.
