Read. Share. Give. The joy of a favorite book!

When posed the question: “What is your favorite children’s book?” faces light up with fond memories of being transported back into magical worlds and distant places. Whether it is the mystical lands of Dr. Seuss or the jungles in Where the Wild Things Are, a great book has the power to take us out of reality for brief moments of time and allows us to become someone completely new.

While children’s books are an integral aspect of any childhood, the reality is that many children don’t have the ability to read and don’t have access to any books. In rural communities in Central America, many children don’t have the basic literacy skills to read or write. They have never felt the magic that comes when you are immersed in your favorite book.

School the World is trying to change that! This holiday season, we want everyone to help us raise awareness about the global literacy crisis and the work School the World does to change it.

We will be launching our Read. Share. Give. campaign this coming November, leading up to Giving Tuesday on November 29: a global day of giving back after mass consumption on Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

We are asking people to post a picture of themselves with their favorite book or just holding up a sign with the name of the book and a brief explanation as to why. We also want you to mention the 775 million people in the world who are currently illiterate and how a donation of $5 can bring a book to a child in need. Our goal is to raise awareness on global illiteracy, but also to reach our goal of $2,500 to continue building classroom libraries with full supplies of children’s books.

More information will be coming but start thinking about your favorite books and what it would mean to give that experience to someone else!
