Abby Long is a freshman at Bishop Feehan High School in Attleboro, MA. This is her second year traveling with School the World.
When we first arrived in the community, I was nervous about meeting the children. I had spent the last six months fundraising, preparing, and anticipating this. I was concerned that I wouldn’t be able to communicate with the children, and that I would be unable to make any kind of bond or friendship with them. Only seconds after stepping out of the School the World van into the community, all these worries disappeared. The children came right up to us and we were able to form great friendships. Even though I have never taken a day of Spanish classes, I was still able to communicate with them through simple smiles and gestures. One of my favorite of all the kids in the community was a little boy named Juan Carlos. He was always the first to approach us and kept us all laughing throughout the trip. This picture shows Juan Carlos and I painting one of the classrooms in the school. This was one of my favorite moments of the entire trip, because not only was I spending time with one of the children, but I was also assisting in the building of the school that will give that child a brighter future.
